Montalto historical centre is approx. 8km from the house and rich in history with the Chiesa della Madonna della Serra being the main feature of the village, built at the beginning of the 13th century and consecrated on 1 August 1227 by Bishop Andrea of the diocese of San Marco, by delegation of the archbishop of Cosenza. Several other churches an also be found in the village together with the Ruggiero Leoncavallo Museum which is located in the monastic complex of San Domenico. This famous Italian composer spent part of his life in Montalto and composed his most famous work: I Pagliacci there. Walking around the village you will also discover the Monument to the Fallen of Montalto.
Within 15 minutes’ drive you can be in the centre of Cosenza which is one of the regions largest cities. This offers all of the conveniences of a large city with the delightful pedestrian shopping area of Corso Mazzini offering a variety of boutiques, café bars/ gelatria, eateries etc.
La Sila National Park, which is approx. ½ hr drive away and boasts some of the most spectacular and dramatic scenery offered in the area coupled with year-round activities such as walking, pony trekking, quad bikes and in the winter month skiing and skiddooing. The main town of Camigliatello hosts many festivals throughout the year based around the wonderful foods that are produced in that area, with porcini mushroom being among its most famous!!
Within just 30 minutes are the beaches at Paola and San Lucido along with many other beach towns dotted along the west coast of Calabria – Fuscaldo, Amantea and Belmonte Calabro to name but a few. Here you can enjoy the coastal towns, beautiful beaches, and crystal-clear sea. Many of the beaches have beach bars and lidos in the summer months and host numerous summer festivals.
The nearest airport is Lamezia Terme which is approx. a 45-minute drive south from the property.
